Hardrod Kushner, a popular author and American rabbi, once said, â€Å" I think of life as a good book the further you get into it the more it begins to make sense.† Over the course of a book, through character development and finding the author’s message, the reader begins to understand the values that are present in the book. Different books, such as To Kill a Mockingbird, Romeo and Juliet, and Fahrenheit 451, all have values that can be found in other books, like Ender’s Game. An examination of Ender’s Game, in comparison to other young adult novels, shows the values of courage, empathy, forgiveness, and community through the character development and the messages the authors want to convey to their readers. The value of courage in the face of adversity is shown in Ender’s Game and To Kill a Mockingbird. The definition of courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus shows courage when he is against the mob who is trying to hang Tom Robinson. â€Å"A flash of pain fear was going out of his eyes†¦ He put the newspaper down very carefully adjusting its creases with lingering fingers. They were trembling a little.† (Harper Lee pg 152) In this quote Atticus realized that the mob was very dangerous, but he had to protect Tom Robinson. This is where Scout realized how much courage her father had. She saw that he did not back down and looked up to him for that.
